What to add to Curry to make it taste better?

In this blog post, we will answer the following question: What to add to Curry to make it taste better? We will also give you a simple but delicious recipe for homemade curry.

What to add to Curry to make it taste better?

To make curry taste better you have to add more spices.  Cloves, turmeric, pepper, cumin, or any of the many spices included in curry mixes are packed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, or antiseptic molecules that help ward off free radicals, prevent circulatory problems, and improve the efficacy of the immune system.

In the market, we can find curry powder, but it is difficult for it to have the freshness and personality of a good homemade mixture, prepared with love and selected ingredients. In addition, some of the preparations contain highly recommended salt or flavorings, such as monosodium glutamate.

The important thing is to seek balance and harmony of flavors. And with a little practice, we will achieve it. To prepare a classic curry recipe, the main ingredients are covered in a spicy liquid and cooked, over low heat, until they are impregnated with the aromas.

Any vegetable broth can be used as a liquid, but it will be tastier with tomato sauce, coconut milk, or almond milk. To give it more consistency you can use soy yogurt, dried fruit cream, or some tahini.

Most recipes improve with the hours, so they are ideal to prepare from one day to the next.

Both olive oil and sesame oil are great for cooking curry recipes. It is important to sauté the spices, also over low heat, before incorporating them into the recipe. Thus they release all their fragrance.

Once ground, it is advisable to store the spices in a tightly closed glass container, in a cool, dark place.

The infinity of curry versions

The different mixtures that are usually used now are the result of the influence of many cultures and countries such as Great Britain, Portugal, Arabia …

But the original formula was born, centuries ago, from the hand of Ayurvedic medicine, a holistic treatment system that identifies each flavor with energy and therapeutic value.

Thanks to the modern science of nutrition, we now know that the combination of some spices, as well as their proportion, is not the result of chance. Thus, when turmeric is mixed with pepper, it improves its absorption and its anti-inflammatory power.

In India, there are as many varieties of curry as there are families, who preserve these recipes as a valuable legacy. Each region has its characteristics, from the hottest in Sri Lanka, with mustard seeds, to the mildest and most fruity in the north, where cardamom or anise is used.

However, it is not an ingredient unique to India, as places like Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, or the Caribbean use it generously in their recipes.

Homemade delicious curry

Ingredients for 2 persons:

  • Two pieces of chicken breast
  • One spring onion
  • One garlic clove
  • One fresh ginger
  • One small chili pepper
  • 5 g of ground curry
  • 5 g of ground turmeric
  • 2 g ground cumin
  • 2 g of crushed tomato
  • Salt
  • 2 g of ground black pepper
  • 200 ml of coconut milk
  • 200 ml of extra virgin olive oil
  • Fresh coriander or parsley

The first thing is to have all the ingredients ready. Cut the chicken into pieces in one bite. Chop the chives and finely chop the clove of garlic, ginger, and chili without the seeds, if we use them. If we use frozen chopped onion we will save even more time.

Heat a little oil in a pan or casserole and fry the chives for 2 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger, and chili, stir a few times and add the tomato. After 1 minute, add all the spices and stir well.

Add the chicken, season and mix. Cook over high heat for a few minutes, until golden all over. Cover with the coconut milk or cream and allow to reduce slightly. Serve with chopped fresh parsley or cilantro.

This chicken curry in 10 minutes is one of those ideal recipes to have in your closet. It can be modified to taste by changing the spices or adding some other vegetables, and we could even substitute basmati rice for flatbreads, couscous, or quinoa. In any case, it is a delicious dish with which we hardly need to invest time. It is also perfect to carry in a Tupperware.

Curry as a spice

Another possibility that curry offers is to use it as a spice. A good option is to flavor rice or legume dishes, such as lentils, which combine in a very natural way with their flavor. In these cases, curry is used as one more spice. However, there are a couple of tricks to get right.

  • The curry should always be added when the rice or stew is already boiling so that it dilutes and flavors the entire preparation equally.
  • It is essential to be very careful with the amount added since its flavor has a lot of presence, and it is advisable to avoid excesses.
  • When buying prepared curry, it should be borne in mind that there are more or less spicy mixtures.

If you want to prepare a homemade curry, you will need a grinder. A mixture of turmeric, cayenne pepper, mustard, cloves, cardamom, dried coriander, nutmeg, and pepper is introduced. All this in proportion to the taste of those who cook.

Although the preparation is very simple, it is advisable to buy curry already prepared, due to its perfect combination of ingredients. Of course, it is important to bear in mind that, among its many varieties, there are more or less spicy mixtures. Therefore, when buying, you should pay attention to the level of spiciness of the chosen preparation.
