What are the beneficial effects of caffeine?

Often, the main reason for consuming coffee is the stimulant effect that caffeine has, but many are unaware of the numerous benefits it can bring to health. 

Other beneficial effects of caffeine are reduced risk of diabetes, hypertension, risk of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, improved mood, reduced symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, protection against UV rays, analgesic effect, increased blood circulation, stimulant of hair growth, among others. 

Due to these effects, caffeine is widely used in drug and cosmetic formulations.

How much caffeine is in the coffee?

Caffeine represents 1.2 to 2.2% of the dry bean weight. The coffee bean presents variation in caffeine according to some factors, such as the species. Arabica coffee has approximately 1.9 milligrams of caffeine and robusta coffee has approximately 2.9 milligrams. 

Other factors that can interfere with the amount of caffeine in coffee are the type of roasting, method of brewing, serving size and the amount of ground coffee a person uses. So, there are several factors that influence the amount of caffeine present in your cup of coffee.

Caffeine is present in greater amounts in Robusta coffee, one of the reasons why this species has more expressive bitterness than Arabica.

Roasted and soluble coffee must contain at least 0.7% caffeine, decaffeinated coffee at most 0.1% and green (raw) coffee at least 1%. Coffees with lower amounts of caffeine may have been adulterated with the addition of other cereals or other substances. 

Also, roasted coffee beans contain more caffeine than green coffee beans. Another very relevant factor in relation to the amount of caffeine in the drink is the way it is prepared. 

Depending on how the coffee is in contact with the water, there will be a greater or lesser extraction of the compounds of interest for the beverage or not. In addition, when filters are used, many compounds are retained in them.

Caffeine has significant losses only on dark roast, since it is stable on light and medium roasts.

Coffees that have been dark roasted may contain less caffeine than coffee beans that have been light roasted. On the other hand, medium and light roasts do not show significant differences between the amount of caffeine. 

The finer the coffee bean is ground, the greater the amount of caffeine found in the beverage, as the finer particles will be in greater contact with the extraction water.

What quantity is safe to drink?

The intake of 75-400 mg of caffeine a day is enough to obtain the beneficial health effects, corresponding to the consumption of half to three cups of coffee a day. The presence of 50 mg/mL of caffeine in the blood can already be fatal. 

However, to achieve this amount with coffee intake is difficult, since 1 liter of coffee has approximately 1000 mg of caffeine and coffee is the food that contributes the most to caffeine intake.
