What is a frappuccino coffee?

In this short article, we are going to discuss what frappuccino is and show some of its history. In addition, we will discuss what versions are available and the better combinations for your drink.

What is a frappuccino coffee?

A Frappuccino coffee is a trademarked blended iced coffee drink from Starbucks. Frappuccino is a registered trademark of frozen coffee drinks sold by the Starbucks coffee chain. It is made up of coffee or another basic ingredient (e.g. cream), mixed with ice and various other ingredients, topped with whipped cream.

Frappuccino is also sold as a coffee drink in bottles in stores and vending machines. The flavors available are caramel, mocha, mocha Lite,  vanilla, coffee, strawberries and cream, mint mocha and dark chocolate mint mocha.

Frappuccino is an acronym for frappé and cappuccino, an espresso with milk foam. The word was registered as a trademark in Boston, Massachusetts. In the Boston area, “frappe” (pronounced “frap”) is a term for a thick milkshake with ice cream, derived from the French word frappé.

The original Frappuccino drink was developed, registered, and sold at George Howell’s coffee shop, The Coffee Connection, in eastern Massachusetts. When Starbucks purchased The Coffee Connection in 1994, it also received the rights to use, manufacture, market and sell the Frappuccino beverage. The drink was launched under the name Starbucks in 1995.

What versions are available?

The versions available are decaf frappuccinos, frappuccino blended créme, milk-based frappuccino, frappuccino juice blend, others. So, you have a wide list of options to choose which frappuccino to take. Or how about choosing them all?

Don’t waste time and delight yourself with this sensational mix.

Decaf Frappuccinos were discontinued in 2008 and extended in 2010. They are currently available. As an alternative to coffee-based versions of Frappuccino, a “cream” was created to make a drink called Frappuccino Blended Crème.

As of May 2010, soy milk-based Frappuccinos are available in stores in the United States and Canada. It has since been rolled out in the UK and other stores around the world.

In the summer of 2006, Starbucks launched the Frappuccino Juice Blend, which is described as “real fruit juices combined with Tazo tea, mixed with ice”. This version differs from Tazoberry’s “mixed tea” versions of several years ago in that it uses more juice and “freshly brewed” iced tea rather than the concentrated beverage in the bottle.

Juice blends were discontinued between 2007 and 2008. Beverages in this category include:

  • Pomegranate (Raspberry and Blackcurrant in the UK and Ireland): Pomegranate, peach and other fruit juices paired with ‘Zen’ iced tea
  • Tangerine (Mango passion fruit in the UK, Ireland, Japan and Spain: Tangerine and other fruit juices combined with iced tea
  • Lemonade for mixed drinks: fresh lemonade with real lemon zest, mixed with ice
  • Lemonade Blended Beverage: Blended Lemonade is still available at Starbucks. This foundation was discontinued in the fall of 2008. However, they are made with another lemonade base and therefore have a different flavor and consistency
  • Others

As the beverage varieties listed above show, many beverages contain additional ingredients, which may include espresso shots, flavored syrups, brownie chips, and flavored powders. Frappuccinos can also be mixed twice or made with more or less ice.

What ingredients can be added on a Frappuccino coffee?

The ingredientes can be added on a Frappuccino coffee are a mocha drizzle, a double chocolate chip or caramel drizzle. In addition, among other ingredients can also be added to the Frappuccino crown. Any beverage can have an additional syrup or many other flavorings added upon request at an additional cost.

However, another modification, albeit less popular, is to order the “affogato style” Frappuccino. The Italian word affogato is translated as “drowned” in Spanish. A Frappuccino affogato has a shot of espresso on top rather than mixing with the rest of the drink.

The most common versions of this variation are known as “caramel affogato” and “mocha affogato”, in which espresso is poured over a square pattern of caramel sauce or mocha instead of whipped cream.

Bananas are also available in Switzerland. Blackberry green tea is currently available in the Philippines and Austria.

Another variation not found in Japan is Frappuccino or Sakura (Cherry Blossom). Frappuccino Jelly was formerly a seasonal offering in the Philippines, more recently than part of the standard menu. Coconut Mocha is available in the US, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil and offers a Frappuccino Dulce de Leche (a syrup derived from the cow’s milk process).
