Ingredients for Four Loko

Caffeine

It is a well-known psychoactive chemical with global annual use of 120,000 tons. Caffeine, a xanthine alkaloid, promotes alertness and wakefulness by activating the central nervous system. If used in excessive doses during the late hours, it might cause sleeplessness. A person who consumes large amounts of coffee daily becomes more tolerant of elevated blood pressure. Caffeine use in excess may result in anxiety, restlessness, psychomotor agitation, and heart palpitations.

Taurine

Taurine is a naturally occurring sulfonic acid that is derived from cysteine. It is essential nutritionally for the proper working of the skeletal muscles and is known to aid in the treatment of liver disorders and hypertension. Taurine is a frequently used component in energy drinks across the globe. Excessive taurine supplementation may increase the plasma levels of growth hormone. According to some reports, excessive taurine might initiate or exacerbate psoriasis.

Guarana

It is a member of the maple family of plants. Guarana includes guaranine, which is a chemical compound similar to caffeine. It is a common ingredient in energy and soft drinks. It is used by athletes to treat body aches and hamstring strains. Because guarana contains caffeine, excessive amounts may cause sleeplessness, diuresis, vomiting, and restlessness. Additionally, it might deplete the calcium content of the bones, resulting in osteoporosis.

Wormwood

Wormwood is a medicinal plant that is used to treat intestinal spasms, diminished sexual drive, liver disease, and stomach distress. Apart from that, it is employed as a pesticide as a flavoring agent in alcoholic drinks. An inappropriate dose of this element might result in a variety of complications. Thujone, an active ingredient in wormwood, may cause urinary retention, tremors, convulsions, and paralysis.

Alcohol

Alcohol is extensively used around the globe due to its intoxicating properties. When someone consumes an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period, they may experience alcohol poisoning, dizziness, and restlessness.

The USFDA announced that energy drinks containing alcohol and caffeine will be removed from the market owing to the health risks they presented. Additionally, the FDA requested that enterprises making such beverages provide a written declaration within 15 days outlining the actions they intend to take to avoid the ban.

This restriction led to individuals purchasing Four Loko in enormous amounts and stockpiling the product. During this time, merchants increased the price of this beverage.

Due to the prohibition placed on Four Loko, the manufacturers decided to reintroduce the product in late December 2010. This is when caffeine, guarana, and taurine were removed from the beverage.

In March 2014, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan placed the makers of Four Loko in jeopardy, charging that they were “promoting the drink to underage youth,” “promoting dangerous and excessive consumption,” and “failing to disclose to consumers the effects and consequences of drinking alcoholic beverages in combination with caffeine.” To which the Four Loko makers responded that “the mix of caffeine and alcohol may be drunk safely and responsibly” and that “the firm violated no regulations.”
