In March 2014, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan placed the makers of Four Loko in jeopardy, charging that they were “promoting the drink to underage youth,” “promoting dangerous and excessive consumption,” and “failing to disclose to consumers the effects and consequences of drinking alcoholic beverages in combination with caffeine.” To which the Four Loko makers responded that “the mix of caffeine and alcohol may be drunk safely and responsibly” and that “the firm violated no regulations.”

According to studies, premixed caffeinated alcoholic beverages such as Four Loko were promoted for their ability to mask alcohol’s effects and intensify the intoxication. The combined use of caffeine and alcohol was increasing, especially among adolescents and college students, leading to increased alcohol related injury. Premixed combination beverages such as Four Loko were associated with deaths and adverse events leading to emergency department visits (1).

On March 26, 2014, Four Loko makers reached an agreement with twenty attorney generals to suspend countrywide manufacturing and distribution of the energy drink.

According to review studies, the main effects of combining energy drinks or caffeine with alcohol was to increase stimulation and alertness, offset alcohol-related fatigue, increase response activation and increase people’s desire to keep drinking.
