How to make donuts at home?

The following are the ingredients that are needed to make donuts;

For Dough:

  • 1 quart of whole milk
  • 1 packet (or 2 1/4 tsp.) granulated sugar plus 1 tsp. granulated sugar divided dry yeast that is active
  • 4 1/2 cup all-purpose flour plus a little extra for the top
  • kosher salt (1/2 teaspoon)
  • 2 large eggs 6 tbsp. butter melted
  • a half teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • For frying, use canola or vegetable oil.

For Glaze:

  • a quarter cup of whole milk
  • 2 c. sugar (powdered)
  • a half teaspoon of pure vanilla extract


  • Set aside a large bowl that has been greased with cooking spray. Add milk to a small microwave-safe bowl or a glass measuring cup. Microwave for 40 seconds or until lukewarm. Stir in a teaspoon of sugar to dissolve, then sprinkle over the yeast and set aside for 8 minutes, or until frothy.
  • Combine the flour and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Whisk together the remaining sugar, butter, eggs, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl with a wooden spoon. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir well, then add the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Knead on a lightly floured surface until elastic and only slightly tacky, about 5 minutes, adding more flour a teaspoon at a time if needed. Form the dough into a tight ball, then place it in an oiled bowl with a clean dish towel on top. 
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Re-knead scraps and punch them out. Place doughnuts and holes on baking sheets, cover with a dish towel, and allow to rise for an additional 40 minutes.
  • To make the glaze, follow these instructions: Whisk together milk, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a large mixing bowl until smooth. 
  • Using paper towels, line a large baking sheet. Preheat 2″ oil in a large dutch oven over medium heat to 350°. Cook doughnuts in batches until both sides are deeply golden brown, about 1 minute per side.
  • Transfer doughnuts to a baking sheet lined with paper towels to drain and cool slightly. Place on a cooling rack after dipping in glaze.
