How To Preserve Dates (3 ways)

In this brief guide, we are going to answer the question “How to preserve dates?”, and discuss the different methods of preserving dates and the potential implications of preserving dates.

How To Preserve Dates

You can preserve dates by various methods depending on the duration of time for which they are to be preserved. The dates can be frozen, stored at room temperature. For a handful of dates and short-term storage, the dates can be stored at room temperature. If the dates are higher in number and the duration of storage is longer then freezing is the best way to preserve dates.

Place dates in an airtight container

To store dates, glass or plastic Tupperware works well. To keep the dates for a day or more the dates should be packed as tightly as possible in the container. There are various other alternatives to store dates such as the dates can be placed in a resealable plastic bag. The air should be released out and the bags should be properly sealed.

Store semi-dry dates at room temperature

To store the semi-dry kind of dates the dates can be placed in the pantry, or on the kitchen counter. It should be taken care that they are out of direct sunlight. These dates should also be stored away from the stove and oven.

Some of the types of dates that are known to be semi-dry in nature are Deglet Noor and Zahidi dates.

Place soft dates in the fridge

Soft dates are really delicate and can get spoiled easily. Soft dates, unlike semi-dry dates, are not cured before they are picked. To keep their flavor and freshness as it is, the soft dates are stored in the fridge.

Eat the dates within a week for the best flavor

The dates can stay well for about a week or two. They will not go bad after a week. The dates can have a very long shelf life, almost up to 1 month. This can be achieved if stored at room temperature in an airtight container. However, the intensity of the flavor decreases with the increase in shelf time.

The dates need to be checked daily for if not,

  • The dates start to dry up.
  • They get white spots on or beneath the skin. These white spots are the sugar crystals. These white spots can be gotten rid of by dissolving the sugar crystals with low heat.
  • Rotten smell, discoloration, or a loss of flavor can be seen in the date. This would mean that the dates have expired.
  • Some of the examples of soft dates are Medjool, Khadrawy, Halawy, and Barhi.

Store the dates in the fridge for a year

To preserve the dates for about a year the dates need to be placed in the fridge. Keeping the dates in the fridge will help to keep the dates to taste fresh for eating as and when needed. It’s seen that the semi-dry dates last longer in the fridge than soft dates.

Place the dates in a freezer bag

For long-term storage using freezer bags can be a good method. The bags need to be squeezed to get the air out of the bag before sealing it.  Also, an airtight container like plastic or glass Tupperware can be used in place of freezer bags. While packing the dates in the container,1 centimeter (0.39 in) of headspace should be left to allow for expansion once they freeze.

Place the bag in the deepest part of the freezer

For a longer run, the dates should be stored in the deepest part of the freezer. This will help the dates freeze faster. Also, this method helps in locking in their freshness and flavor. Storing dates in the freezer is a great way to store dates for a much later date.

Take the dates out of the freezer 3 hours before using them

Before using the dates, the dates should be taken out about 3 hours before use and defrosted. This way, the dates will get enough time to thaw before they are used in any recipe or eaten raw.

If the dates need to be used right away, the dates are soaked in a bowl of hot water. They are soft and ready to use within 30 minutes.

Store the dates in the freezer for up to 3 years or more

For storage of the dates for more than a year, the dates are stored in an airtight container to avoid freezer burn. Dates can last in the freezer for many years if they are sealed properly. Care should be taken that if after taking dates out of the freezer, discoloration, loss of flavor, or a rotten smell is observed, then they have expired.
