American Brandy

Although it is commonly referred to as “brandy,” the United States does not have any specific brandy designations or regulations. American brandy is frequently produced by wineries or in winemaking regions. For years, brandy production was centered on the West Coast, but more craft distilleries across the country are taking on the task, often using grapes grown locally.


Eau-de-vie is a French term for fruit brandy that means “life water.” The flavor of the fruit is usually very light, and the spirit is clear and unaged. It can be made from a variety of fruits and is often compared to traditional German schnapps. Apple (de pomme), pear (de poire), peach (de peche), pomace (de marc), and yellow plum are the most common (de mirabelle). It’s also used to make sweet, flavored liqueurs as a base spirit.


Similar to the French eau-de-vie de marc, grappa (literally “grape stalk”) was developed in Italy as a way to reduce winemaking waste. Grappa is typically clear and unaged, and is made by fermenting and distilling the pomace (leftover grape skins, stems, and seeds).

How to consume brandy?

Brandy is frequently consumed neat. Brandies, cognac, and Armagnac that are well-aged and higher-end are especially well-suited to sipping from a brandy snifter. The specialized glass with the oversized bowl captures the aroma of room-temperature brandy beautifully and enhances the experience. 

After dinner, nearly all brandies, including chilled eau-de-vie and room-temperature grappa, make a nice digestif. In Italy, grappa is frequently served in or alongside hot espresso.

Randy is a great addition to any cocktail. It’s one of the most popular base spirits for classic cocktails, and it’s usually only lightly enhanced with a few other ingredients. Sangria and mulled wines are two of the more elaborate drinks that include brandy. 

There are many old recipes that call for apple, apricot, cherry, or peach brandies. Spanish brandy works well in mixed drinks, and pisco is best known for its use in the pisco sour, but it’s also showing up in a variety of modern cocktail recipes.
