How much do eggs cost at Costco?

In this article, we will answer the question “How much do eggs cost at Costco?”, and why eggs are expensive in Costco?

How much do eggs cost at Costco?

Eggs at Costco are expensive due to new laws stating that the eggs must come from the humane sources of breeding places, should be organic and GMO-free.

This law causes the rise up to 5 dollars per two dozen eggs at Costco depending on which warehouse you are buying from.

The main reason for the spike in price is to move towards cage-free egg production. Costco was also criticized in past for animal cruelty but now people are praising them for their new cage-free policy.

Some of the nonprofit organizations working for the country marked this step as a “landmark decision”.

“Costco’s move will spare millions of animals from being confined for their entire lives in cages so small they can barely turn around. We commend Costco for being the first U.S. retailer to address this key animal welfare and food safety issue throughout its global supply chain,” Tuxford said.

What happened to eggs at Costco?

In 2020, Costco planned to offer only those eggs that came from cage-free chickens and are organic.

This step was taken to make the egg healthier and nutritious for the consumer but in today’s world where everything is hybrid or genetically changed for the service of mankind, this option came with a cost.

At Costco, about 95% of eggs were already cage-free but the eggs imported from the other countries were not up to the mark. For example, eggs coming from china were from chicken reared on inorganic feed.

For this in China, a facility present in the mainland of China decided to rear 50,000 cage-free hens to get organic and healthy eggs.

But it is also said that this transition will take several years to complete and Costco has to look for some alternative country to import eggs from.

If you are a consumer and you can eat eggs having other sources too then there are many options for you. According to a survey, grocery stores, in general, can provide eggs at lesser rates than at Costco.

You can save up to 50 cents per dozen in grocery stores or you can get extra large 24 eggs for the price of two dozen normal eggs at Costco.

As per Bureau of Labore Statistics Data, the price of 12 eggs is just 1.33 dollars, but if you prefer organic and cage-free eggs then you will have to pay 2.5 dollars per dozen eggs.

Why do you need a price list?

Different labels are found in different stores and retail centers, like all-natural, fair trade, GMO-free but at Costco one almost all the eggs there is a label used called “cage-free”.

Cage-free is a term that means the chicken was not confined in a cage throughout its life because that will be animal abuse and each laying hen has at least 120 square inches of farm to wander, eat and lay eggs.

Costco is working well on a cage-free strategy and in almost all the countries where Costco is located, they are providing cage-free and organic eggs.

In countries like France, U.K, Spain there is a percentage of 100 cage-free eggs at Costco.

Whenever you go to the Costco warehouse, take a look at the prices of eggs especially. Among the eggs under the cage-free eggs category, Kirkland is providing the best quality eggs.
