How to cook Basmati rice?

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water or 500 ml water or add as required depending on the quality of rice
  • ½ teaspoon oil (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt or add as per taste

Instructions

Prepping and soaking basmati rice

  1. Add 1 cup heaped basmati rice to a bowl.
  1. Rinse the rice under cold running water until the water runs clear.
  1. Soak the rice in ¾ to 1 cup water for at least 30 minutes.
  1. Strain the rice after 30 minutes and set it aside.

Cooking basmati rice

  1. Fill a wide mouth, deep-bottomed pan with 2 cups of water (500 ml). Stir in ½ tsp butter, oil, or ghee, and ¼ tsp or as per taste salt. You can skip adding the grease if you like.
  1. Bring the water to a boil on medium heat. Then add the rice to the boiling water.
  1. Stir the rice gently so that all the rice grains settle down at the bottom of the pan.
  1. Cover the pan with a lid and let the rice cook for about 8 minutes on a low-medium flame. This should take about 8 minutes. Add 2-3 tbsp of hot water to the rice before covering the pot if the rice looks uncooked.
  1. Check for doneness by pressing a rice grain between your forefinger and thumb. Alternatively, you can bite a rice grain. If the rice grain is mashed easily and does not resist biting, rice is cooked.
  1. After removing the pan from the heat, let the rice stand for about 5 minutes before fluffing them with a fork.
  1. Serve with curry or dal.
