Ingredients of lasagna:

Lasagna is made of several layers of noodles, ricotta cheese, sauces and topping of mozzarella. These ingredients are used to make lasagna a full meal when consumed. But lasagna’s ingredients are very specific in nature.

Only ricotta cheese is used as it is flat and in the form of sheets. Similarly, ridged noodles are best because they stick more to the sauce to maintain the consistency of lasagna. Also these ingredients can stay in temperature for a long time if cooked.

How to make lasagna:

Lasagna recipes show that layering is the most important thing when making a lasagna. But it is important to prepare the ingredients before you layer them. The method to make a perfect lasagna is:

  1. Start with preparing the sauce, for it you have to take a saucepan and heat it over medium heat. Add oil on the pan once it reaches required hotness, then add carrot, onion, celery and bay leaf in it. Cook these ingredients for 5-6 minutes and see if they have softened. Add garlic once ingredients soften and then cook for two minutes
  2. Now add minced meat in the pan and turn the heat up, break large chunks of meat with the help of cooking spatula. Heat it until it turns brown and season it with salt and pepper. Add tomato puree to the mixture and cook it well and then pour red wine if you want to.
  3.  Add tomatoes to the pan and bring to simmer then turn the heat to low. Leave to let it cook gently and stir continuously, until the ingredients are thickened. Make sure you don’t dry up the mixture but keep it moist. If it looks dry add stock with water. Taste this mixture and add seasoning as necessary and then make béchamel sauce or use already made sauce
  4.  Remember to preheat the oven to 190°C or 375 F, take a baking dish and add one-third of mixture on it. Spread béchamel sauce over it and then add a layer of lasagna sheet. Then spread another layer of mixture on the lasagna layer, add lasagna noodles too if you want to.
  5.  Repeat the process until required thickness of lasagna is attained. You can add as many layers as you want and complete the look with mozzarella or parmesan topping over the top layer.

Drizzle some extra virgin olive oil on the baking tray and place it in a preheated oven to bake. Bake it for 30-40 minutes in total or remove it once it turns golden brown or starts to bubble. You can also see if lasagna is cooked by putting a knife in it and checking for cheese softness.

Can you freeze lasagna?

Total time of the process:

The total time required by the process is nearly as much as two hours in general. But it may vary according to your speed, condition of frozen ingredients, heat of the stove and preheating of the oven. Out of this time the time required in making is only 30-40 minutes.

The 30-40 minutes’ time is measured if the oven is preheated and ingredients are already cooked. Making a lasagna is a tiring process and takes too much time. It is better to preheat an oven so baking only happens 30-40 minutes. This saves your time and energy as well.

Use of pre-cooked sheets:

Sometimes when lasagna sheets are exposed to heat for 30-40 minutes in an oven they dehydrate and lose their softness. This causes a huge problem as lasagna sheets are key ingredient of lasagna, to avoid it some people use pre-cooked lasagna sheets.

When pre-cooking lasagna sheets are placed in boiling water to moist them. Cook these sheets in boiling water for one minute, this softens the sheets and prepares them for cooking. The sheets also retain most of its moisture and don’t dehydrate when cooked.

Another way to avoid dehydration of lasagna sheets is by covering lasagna with aluminum foil. Covering lasagna with aluminum foil retains the water in it when it is cooked. But make sure to remove foil in last ten minutes to evenly cook the lasagna
