A Rice cooker is an electronic countertop kitchen appliance. As the name suggests, it is used to cook rice. It is used to cook many different types of rice-based dishes. It is a very user-friendly tool. It is an automatic appliance that does not require much supervision.

To cook the required amount of rice, it comes with a measuring cup. This measuring cup is used to pour rice into the cooker and also to measure the exact quantity of rice required for preparing a particular dish.

Rice cookers work by boiling water. The water gets absorbed into the rice until it becomes tender. The process of cooking rice is similar to how it is cooked using a pressure cooker. The major difference is the absence of a gas stove.

Different types of rice will require different amounts of water. The time to cook thoroughly will also be different. The rice cooker makes it easier to gauge when the rice has finished cooking by turning itself off automatically.

Also, the rice cooker comes with a manual that has specific directions for usage. It is best to follow the listed directions, as cooking time often varies depending upon the type of rice cooker.

For every one cup of rice such as long-grain white rice, medium-grain white rice, short-grain white rice, long-grain brown rice, parboiled rice, basmati or jasmine rice etcetera, the amount of water generally required is different.

How to use a rice cooker for making rice?

Follow the following steps to cook rice using a rice cooker.

1. Measure the required amount of rice. Then place it in a container.

2. Wash the rice under the water tap.

3. Transfer the rice to the inner part of the rice cooker. Afterwards, to clean it, a rice napkin can be used.

4. Connect the rice cooker to an electrical socket and turn it on. Most models have a light indicator on the front side (body of the rice cooker) to know if it is on. Once the rice is fully cooked the light will get automatically turned off.

5. Let the cooked rice rest for at least 15 minutes. This will make the rice settle well in the warm interior. Any excess moisture will evaporate, to allow the rice to fully absorb the water.

6. The rice can now be served. You may use plastic serving utensils or rice paddles to serve your rice.
