Does Hunt’s tomato sauce have sugar?

The sugar-free version of Hunt’s tomato sauce claims to have no sugar added. But is this entirely true? Let’s see:

Among the Sugar-free Hunt’s Pasta Sauce ingredients are:

  • Water

Less Than 2% Of:

  • Salt
  • Carrot Fiber
  • Spices
  • Citric Acid
  • Xanthan Gum   
  • Natural Flavor
  • Acesulfame Potassium
  • Sucralose!

Sucralose is a sugar substitute commonly used in baking. It is 320-1000 times sweeter than sugar but is noncaloric due to the body’s inability to break it down. Now, we will let you decide whether this means that Hunt’s tomato sauce is sugar-free or not! 

Does Hunt’s Bolognese Style Tomato Sauce have sugar?

Yes! Hunt’s bolognese style tomato sauce is a product high in sugars and sodium. It contains 560 mg of sodium for each 130 g serving. The second ingredient present in the product is sugar, it contains 2 tablespoons per serving.

Nutritional labeling is difficult to understand, limiting the consumer to identify the high amount of sugars and sodium it contains.

Hunts Bolognese Style Tomato Sauce (360-gram container):

Sugars:

It contains 11 grams (g) of sugars per 130g serving, which is the equivalent of just over 2 teaspoons of sugar.

The amount of sugars contained in a serving covers 22% and 28% of the maximum tolerable consumption of added sugars for an entire day in adults and children, respectively, according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization.

We note that although it is a salty product it contains added sugar. This situation has become a problem worldwide since consumers are unaware of the sugar content in salty products.

It has been observed that on average 68% of the products on the market contain added sugar.

The “hidden” sugar in the products generates a lack of knowledge about the actual consumption of it during the day, which can be a health risk.

Sodium:

It contains 560 milligrams (mg) of sodium per serving, which covers 28% of the total recommended sodium for an adult and 37% for a child, 2 according to WHO.

It should be noted that the consumption of the container in its entirety would exceed the sodium consumption recommendation for children.

The direct association between high sodium intake and high blood pressure has been observed for several decades.3

Therefore, it has been recommended to limit its consumption in the usual diet.4

One of the great risks of high blood pressure is that it is considered the second leading cause of kidney failure.5

At present, it has been seen that high sodium intake not only negatively impacts adults but also has a high incidence in children and adolescents. This is attributed to the high sodium intake coming mainly from processed and ultra-processed foods.

Energy:

Contains 80.5 calories per 130g serving.

According to the nutrient intake recommendations for the US population, the average daily consumption for adults is 2,000 calories and 1,579 calories for children.

One serving of the product covers 4% and 5% of the total caloric intake per day for adults and children, respectively, coming only from the sauce used to prepare a single dish.

Fiber:

Contains 3.5 g of fiber per serving due to the nature of the product.

Ingredients:

Contains 12 ingredients.

Tomato puree (tomato paste, water), sugar, fresh tomato, soy protein, iodized salt, dehydrated onion, olive oil, garlic powder, spices, citric acid, natural and artificial beef flavoring.

Its second ingredient is sugar. With this, we can clearly distinguish that it contains added sugar.

Labeled:

This product is HIGH IN SUGARS AND SODIUM.

On the packaging, it is not possible to clearly appreciate the high amount of sugars and sodium it contains, but it is shown as a tomato puree used in the preparation of Bolognese style pasta.

Our assessment:

Moderate its consumption, due to the high amounts of sugars and sodium it contains.

We propose you:

Prepare a homemade sauce of ground tomato, seasoned with herbs, which will, of course, have a lower amount of sugar and sodium!
