Does bold coffee have more caffeine?

In this brief guide, we will discuss the following question, “does bold coffee have more caffeine?”, what is bold coffee, its benefits, how it is made, and other queries related to this topic.

Does bold coffee have more caffeine?

No, bold coffee does not have more caffeine. To prepare a bold coffee you can use light, medium, or dark roasted coffee beans, and the more you add coffee to your cup the more it becomes bold.

Moreover, coffee made from dark roasted beans might have more caffeine when compared with lightly roasted coffee beans. The caffeine content in coffee depends also on the type of coffee beans and their origins, for example, Robusta coffee is higher in caffeine when compared to Arabica coffee.

However, roasting bold coffee needs more time than lightly roasted beans. High temperatures and time might slightly affect the caffeine content in coffee beans.

Also, during the roasting process, dark beans lose more weight than lightly roasted beans. So, dark beans will be more concentrated in caffeine since their weight is decreased, whereas the weight of the lightly roasted beans slightly decreased.

Thus, when comparing the bold coffee beans to lightly roasted coffee beans you will notice that dark beans are higher in caffeine.

Furthermore, since the weight of dark beans decreased more than lightly roasted beans you will need more quantity of the black coffee to make a cup of coffee. So, you will end up having a cup of coffee with higher caffeine content when compared to light beans.

What is bold coffee?

Usually bold coffee comes from the brewing of dark roast coffee. Dark roast coffee is green coffee beans heated and roasted at high temperatures which can be around 400°F or 204°C for about 15 minutes. Temperature and the length of roasting are what differentiate between light, medium and dark roasted coffee.

The lighter the coffee beans are, the lower the temperature and the time they undergo during roasting and vice versa. Furthermore, regarding the taste of the bold coffee made from dark roast coffee, it has an acidic, smokey, earthy, nutty, and woody taste. In addition, bold coffee has a very aromatic smell and has a bold color.

On the other hand, light roast coffee has a less acidic taste and has a more fruity and herbal flavor.

How to make a bold coffee?

There are several steps to follow to have a good and tasty bold coffee:

  • First of all, choose your coffee and it all depends on your taste. If you want your coffee to have a fruity taste choose the lightly roasted coffee and if you want a strong aromatic flavor choose the dark roasted coffee.
  • After that, grind your coffee if you already purchased coffee beans. The more you grind your coffee the more it will have a bitter taste. So make sure your grounded coffee has a medium size.
  • Once you ground your coffee, use two tablespoons for every 180 milliliters of water. Use hot water to extract the flavor from your coffee.
  • Brew the water with the coffee for about 5 minutes to extract all the flavor. You can brew it for a longer time, about 10 minutes depending on the final flavor you are expecting.

What are the health benefits of bold coffee?

All types of coffee are high in antioxidants, however, the concentration depends on the type of coffee and the roasting process they went through. Furthermore, since bold coffee is usually made from dark roasted coffee, it is high in a type of antioxidants called melanoidins.

Melanoidins are issued from the roasting process and most specifically from the last stage of the Maillard reaction during which the roasting temperatures are very high and the water activity is low. These compounds, other than having an antioxidant effect, have antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and antiglycative activities.

Moreover, dark coffee is beneficial for brain health since caffeine has been linked with a lower risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease development. Also, since it is high in antioxidants it prevents cancer cell growth and proliferation. In addition, it ameliorates liver health by reducing the risk of developing liver cirrhosis and cancer.

Finally, the majority of coffee has the same health benefits, but when comparing light roasted to dark roasted coffee, it was seen that light roasted contains more acrylamide than dark roasted beans. Acrylamides are formed during roasting and baking at high temperatures and their development is connected to cancer development. However, it is not confirmed yet.
