Can you make coffee like tea?

How to brew a coffee without a coffee maker?

The Coffee Bag method

This is a perfect method to brew coffee for those of you who want to make their coffee like tea first thing in the morning.

Things you’ll need

Instructions for brewing

  1. Weigh the coffee grounds for a single-serving and place them in the coffee filter.
  2. Make a pouch of it and secure it using a string.
  3. Heat a mug of water in the kettle, pot, or in the microwave, whichever option is available.
  4. Place the coffee pouch in an empty mug and pour the hot water onto it.
  5. Let the coffee steep for 5 minutes on average. Keep it for longer if you want a stronger brew and vice versa.
  6. Remove the pouch when brew is done. Enjoy.

The strainer method

This method works fine if the strainer of your coffee maker is broken and you are thinking to make the coffee like tea. You do not need a fancy filter and you can save yourself a trip to the store if you have a double mesh strainer with small holes.

Things you’ll need

  • Ground coffee
  • Water
  • Kettle or saucepan
  • Mesh strainer (a small, conical one is ideal)
  • Mug

Instructions for brewing

  1. Heat weighed water in the kettle or pot.
  2. Weigh coffee grounds according to the water and the number of cups you will be brewing.
  3. Add coffee grounds into the simmering hot water.
  4. Brew the coffee for about 2 minutes or longer for a stronger coffee.
  5. Strain the water using the mesh strainer into the mugs. Serve and enjoy.

The hanky method

Things you will need

  • Coffee grounds
  • Hot water
  • Binder paper clips or clothespins
  • Clean hanky or other clean, linen or cotton cloth (cheesecloth works)
  • Mug or mason jar

Instructions for brewing

  1. Adjust a handkerchief across the top of your coffee mug or mason jar such that it forms a pouch in the middle to hold the coffee grounds.
  2. Secure the hanky using at least 3 clips. Place weighed coffee grounds into the hanky pouch.
  3. Pour hot water onto the grounds. Start slowly.
  4. Steep for 5 minutes or more for a stronger brew. Serve warm and enjoy.

The faux French Press

Things you’ll need

  • Coffee grounds, preferably coarse-ground
  • Hot Water
  • Tablespoon
  • Deep bowl
  • Mug

Instructions for brewing

  1. Add weighed coffee grounds into your mug.
  2. Add only a small amount of water in the start to saturate the coffee grounds. Add the rest of the water slowly.
  3. Let the coffee steep for more or less 5 minutes.
  4. Now take a spoon and press the grounds to the bottom of the mug gently. Without tipping, pour the brew into another mug. Do not disturb the sediment to ensure a clear brew.

The cowboy method

Things you’ll need

  • Coffee grounds
  • Water
  • Kettle or pot
  • Spoon or another utensil to stir with
  • Mug

Instructions for brewing

  1. Put 1Tbsp coffee grounds and 8 ounces of water into a kettle or pot.
  2. Boil the water with the grounds for about 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, let the coffee grounds steep and settle at the bottom of the pot/kettle for about 7 minutes.
  3. Pour the brew into the mug without disturbing the sediment. The brew won’t be as clear but that is how the cowboy style has to be.

The microwave method

Things you’ll need

  • Coffee grounds
  • Water
  • Microwave
  • Mug

Instructions for brewing

  1. Heat a mug of water in the microwave for about 2 minutes on high power.
  2. Now pour 1Tbsp of coffee grounds into the hot water.
  3. Let the coffee steep for about 5 minutes and drink it warm avoiding the last sip because it will be very bitter.

Cold Brew method

Things you’ll need

  • Coarse coffee grounds
  • 2 wide-mouth mason jars
  • Cheesecloth or another filtration method (eg. fine mesh strainer, hanky, etc)
  • Water
  • Refrigerator
  • 14-24 hours worth of patience

Instructions for brewing

  1. Add coffee grounds and water in a mason jar in a 1:5 ratio. Use a 1:3 ratio for a stronger and a 1:8 ratio for a stronger brew.
  2. Secure the jar with a tight lid and keep it in the fridge for about 14-24 hours depending upon the strength of the brew that you desire.
  3. Then using a coffee filter, strain the coffee grounds and safely store the brewed water in the fridge for another 7-10 days.
