Yes, you can freeze parmesan. If you have bought a large amount of parmesan and It will take you a while to use it all up then freezing it to extend its shelf life would be a safe option.

Shredded or grated parmesan will naturally be losing its sensory properties faster as compared to a big chunk or a block of parmesan because of a larger surface area. So freezing is a very effective way to ensure prolonged shelf life.

The shelf life of parmesan

Parmesan in block form is quite a shelf-stable. If unopened, Parmigiano Reggiano should last 7 to 9 months easily. It would taste okay past a few months after by ‘Best-by’ date. If opened, It is best to consume it within 1 or two months. 

Shredded or grated form becomes vulnerable to quick quality degradation. So It is best to use the refrigerated shredded parmesan within 3 to 5 days after opening the packet. If unopened, It should last 7 days easily

How to freeze parmesan properly?

Freezing a parmesan block

Follow the steps given below to freeze parmesan block

  1. First of all, reduce the size of the cheese block by cutting it into desired smaller chunks.
  2. Place these chunks in a resealable plastic bag.
  3. Squeeze as much air as you can from the plastic bag and secure it by sealing the bag.
  4. Put the plastic bag into the freezer and use these chunks in your dishes for as long as 6 months.

Freezing grated parmesan

Follow the steps given below to Freeze grated parmesan

  1. Spread the grated cheese on a baking tray evenly and place it in the freezer for an hour or two. You could also line the tray with parchment paper for your ease.
  2. After an hour or two, check to see If the shreds stick together. If they do so, use your fingers to break them. Use a spatula if your hands are not clean. Note that store-bought shredded parmesan does not stick because of added cellulose.
  3. Take the grated cheese and put them in an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag.
  4. Put the bag in the freezer and you are good to go for at least 2 months.

Factors to consider when freezing Parmesan

Always keep the following factors in mind before freezing parmesan

  1. Know that your cheese will suffer textural and flavor losses and this loss is directly proportional to the period of freezing. The cheese becomes brittle with time.
  2. Keep in mind that you cannot refreeze your parmesan. Doing so will only add to a poor texture resulting from water crystallization.
  3. Prioritize freezing your cheese in grated form. This eliminates the need to thaw your cheese before use and saves you a lot of time and effort.

Best way to defrost parmesan

Slowly defrosting parmesan is the best and should be the only way to consider when you thaw your cheese or else there would be huge quality losses. For this purpose take the required amount of cheese from the freezer and put it in the fridge for at least 24 hours before use.

Big chunks take comparatively longer time to defrost as compared to smaller cubes.

Grated parmesan is not required to be thawed before use. You can add it directly to your dish.

How long does parmesan last in the freezer?

Parmesan is a hard and well-aged cheese. It tolerates the freezing conditions quite suitably. If properly frozen, parmesan cheese will be considered the best quality for up to 12-18 months. Past this time, It does not remain as fresh as before but still safe to consume.

If parmesan is stored at 0 degrees Fahrenheit persistently without any major and frequent temperature fluctuations, It will remain safe indefinitely

Ways to use frozen shredded parmesan

Grated or shredded parmesan in frozen form is very handy to use for toppings in any pasta dish or curry. You could either add it to a soup or a stew or top your garlic bread with parmesan shreds. Decorate your chicken fillet with parmesan and soy herb or use it to make parmesan crisps.
