Insoluble fibers increase bowel movement, favoring the intestinal transit, and increases the frequency of defecation (1,2,3). For these reasons, a diet rich in insoluble fibers is encouraged for patients suffering from constipation. 

When one has constipation, fibrous foods serve as laxatives by absorbing water and increasing colonic motility (bowel movements). 

On the other hand, food rich in soluble fibers may be and should be consumed when you have diarrhea. According to studies, soluble fibers can help treat diarrhea due to the water holding capacity of this type of fiber. 

Although both soluble and insoluble fibers are indigestible, that is, cannot be normally digested by the human body, soluble fibers are soluble in water, while insoluble fibers are not. The properties of soluble fibers are of binding water, thus absorbing the water from the intestines and increasing the volume of the stool (1,2,3).

  • Fruit pulps rich in insoluble fibers: Fruits of high insoluble fiber amounts should be avoided as much as possible when one is suffering from diarrhea. Eating too much fruit pulps such as mangoes, fruit, and pineapple would, without doubt, contribute to the increase of the intestinal transit, thus aggravating the diarrhea
  • Milk: some individuals have difficulty in digesting lactose during diarrhea episodes and therefore the consumption of milk is not recommended. On the other hand, yogurt and fermented milk products are permitted
  • Highly fatty foods and high sugar foods should be limited. The ingestion of these foods favors the growth of unhealthy microbiota in the intestines, while suppresses the health promoting bacteria
  • Caffeine-containing foods and drinks, such as soft drinks, coffee and chocolate. Caffeine increases the intestinal movements and reduce food transit 

What foods should be consumed when one has diarrhea?

Foods that have a high amount of soluble fibers are recommended during an episode of diarrhea. The following foods are encouraged during diarrhea (1,2,4,5):

  • A diarrhea patient should eat well-cooked grains that contain soluble fibers. Soluble fibers help bind water and increase the volume of the stool, reducing the water loss. Examples of foods rich in soluble fibers are cooked oatmeal and oat bran, applesauce and bananas
  • Vegetables should be adequately cooked to make their digestion easier. Cooked vegetables that are rich in soluble fibers are cooked potatoes and cooked carrots
  • Boiled eggs can be eaten instead of fried eggs. Eggs are rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins, which help in the recovering process
  • Yogurt and fermented dairy are recommended, especially probiotics. According to studies, probiotic bacteria help in the prevention and treatment of diarrhea, as they can suppress the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the intestines, produce metabolites related to improved health and favor the immune system
