Is jack crevalle poisonous?

Crevalle jacks are often toxic to eat because of the threat of ciguatera poisoning, however, they’re prized as a game fish. Ciguatoxins are produced by benthic dinoflagellates in the genus Gambierdiscus found on Caribbean and Pacific coral reefs. Herbivorous fish, feeding on the reef vegetation where Gambierdiscus is epiphytic, accumulate ciguatoxin precursors in their tissues. The toxins continue to bioaccumulate through the food web to large predatory reef fish, particularly barracudas, jacks (including jack crevalle), snappers, and grouper (2).

Can you keep jacks in Florida?

In Florida, these fish are unregulated, which means you can fish up to 100 pounds. Free roaming fish that can appear along the Gulf coast at any time, often in large schools of similar sized fish (large fish tend to become increasingly solitary) (5). As a fish tackler, you can tackle two fish of more than 100 pounds of weight together and you can keep both, but no more than this. There is no daily or seasonal luggage limit for cats, just 100 lbs.

It is most commonly found in the fish that are shrugged off the coasts of Massachusetts and Florida. Adult bucephalus are found almost without exception in the gastric caeca and small intestine of predatory fishes (3).
