Can you eat in a library?

In this brief article we will answer the query, “Can you eat in a library?” with an in-depth analysis of the general rules of a library and guidelines on eating and drinking in a library.

Can you eat in a library?

A library is an area where you go for studying, writing, and learning in a peaceful environment. So, keeping in view the decorum of the library it is not allowed to eat in a library.

You are particularly not allowed to take hot food or meals. However, you can have non-alcoholic drinks and eatables. If you are drinking something in the library, then you must put all the rubbish in the dust bin. Also, if there is a specific area designated in your library for eating, then you must go to that place to have your eatables.

General rules of the library

Here’s the list of general library rules, which everyone must follow. You should:

  • Work quietly
  • Be kind to the books
  • Keep the library neat and clean
  • Be a good listener
  • Not interrupt others
  • Not eat crunchy food
  • Clean up your space before leaving

Is it legally not allowed to eat in the library?

Yes! It is legally not allowed to bring any food or eat anything in the library. This policy was launched recently on 6th September 2021. According to this policy, you can only bring lidded drinks.

Why is it not allowed to eat in the library?

Because it could cause noise and may cause disturbance for the surrounding. Susurration of plastics, crunching on chips may cause a disturbance.

Moreover, you may drop any piece while eating and don’t bother to pick it up and put it in the bin. So, it may cause pollution for others and the environment of the library can get in trouble.

Eating is not allowed in the library because of another reason: the library is kept clean from pests and moulds.

Guidelines on eating and drinking in the library

Generally, it is not allowed to bring and eat food in the library. But if you are taking something with you then you must know the following guidelines:

Hot food:

It is prohibited to bring hot food to the library. You can take your hot food to the cafe and enjoy your meal.

Cold food:

In the library, you can bring cold snacks with you. But make sure to keep your surroundings neat and clean.

Covered containers:

You can bring hot and cold drinks in a properly covered container. You should clean the space before leaving. You must consider that you are not disturbing other people while eating.

Drinking alcohol:

Drinking alcohol is prohibited in the library. You may be given a warning letter if you are found drinking alcohol. Do not create a mess while eating. If you drop anything down, you should pick it up and throw it in the dustbin.

Keeping the library environment clean and peaceful is the duty of every single individual to put the effort into cleaning the environment. You should not adopt such behaviour that could bother others. Just to avoid all this mess these guidelines are being designed and expected that each one of you would follow them

If you are found not obeying these guidelines in the library, you may be asked to discard the food or leave the library immediately.
