Yes, you can eat gruyere cheese when pregnant. According to the NHS, all hard cheese, even the ones made with unpasteurized milk, is safe to eat when pregnant. Hard cheese contains less water content which makes it harder for bacteria to grow. 

What is gruyere?

Gruyere is a cheese from Switzerland. It is named after the town of Gruyeres in Fribourg. It is a yellow cheese known for its rich, creamy, salty, and nutty flavor. Is classified as a swiss type or alpine cheese and when it is fully aged, it tends to have a small crack that gives a slightly grainy texture.

It is aged for about 6 months which makes it perfect for pregnant women because its water content diminishes with the aging process. 

Gruyere cheese is protected under the designation of origin in Switzerland and in France. The cheese must indicate where it comes from so that they are not confused. They are sold as Swiss Gruyere or French Gruyere. 

There is one special variety of gruyere cheese that is only produced in the Swiss Alps during the summer, it is known as Le Gruyere Switzerland AOC Alpage.

Some cheeses that can substitute gruyere and are also safe to eat when pregnant are Beaufort, Comté, Jarlsberg, Emmental, and Fontina. 

Is gruyere cheese made with pasteurized milk?

No, gruyere cheese is made with unpasteurized milk. You can still eat it when pregnant because hard cheese has a very low water content that makes listeria hard to grow. 

If you want to cook your gruyere just to be safe that it doesn’t contain any pathogen remember you need to cook it up to 165 degrees celsius plus a 3-minute stand time for safety. 

According to the USDA, “3-minute stand for safety refers to the time that the product remains at the final temperature after it has been removed from the oven, grill, or stove. During the 3 minutes after it has been removed, its temperature remains constant and continues to rise, to kill pathogens’’

If you don’t have a thermometer you need to see it steaming hot. 

What cheese should I avoid when pregnant? 

Pregnant women should avoid soft cheese, bacteria-ripened, and blue-veined cheese that tend to grow listeria. Here is a list of cheese that is usually unsafe to pregnant women:

  • Brie
  • Camembert
  • Feta
  • Roquefort
  • Queso fresco
  • Queso Blanco
  • Panela
  • Curd

Almost every gruyere cheese that you can buy in your supermarket is safe to eat when pregnant. Always remember to read the labels to be sure of the ingredients. All labels should list if it’s made with pasteurized milk and for how long they have aged.

How can I add gruyere cheese to my diet when pregnant?

Gruyere cheese is the perfect cheese for baking, fondues, or dip. It is so creamy that you will love to use it in your food. Its texture makes it so good with pasta, ravioli, or gnocchi. You can also add it to your cheese board or grated to add to your pasta or pizza. 

It is an excellent idea for you with your Croque madame, here is a recipe:

  • 1 pound sliced gruyere cheese
  • 16 slices bread
  • ½ pounds sliced fully cooked ham 
  • ½ cup butter softened
  • 4 to 6 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 8 large eggs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper

Preheat the oven to 400. Place half of the cheese on 8 bread slices; top with the fool-cooked ham and remaining bread. Spread outside of the sandwiches with softened butter.

On a grill, toast sandwiches over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Spread tops with mayonnaise; top with cheese. Transfer to a baking sheet; bake 4-5 minutes until cheese is melted. 

In another bowl,  heat 1 tablespoon of butter at medium heat. Break 4 eggs, 1 at a time, onto the griddle. Reduce heat to low. Sprinkle it with salt and pepper. Place eggs over sandwiches. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
