Can you eat flour tortillas without cooking them?

In this article, we will answer the question “Can you eat flour tortillas without cooking them?”, and how to heat tortillas?

Can you eat flour tortillas without cooking them?

No, you cannot eat flour tortillas without cooking them. Either dough or pre-cooked tortillas, you should always heat them first to get the maximum taste and to avoid any health risks. Eating raw tortilla dough may lead to E.coli or Salmonella infection.

Symptoms of food poisoning from raw tortilla dough

Depending upon the virulence of the ingested pathogen, the amount of the ingested pathogen, and your immunity, the symptoms of the resulting food poisoning could be mild or severe.

The symptoms of E.coli infection manifest 3-4 days after the consumption of contaminated food. Some of the common symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. The symptoms should be gone within a week.

Sometimes the infection morphs into a serious illness called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which is characterized by kidney failure, stroke, and even death.

Symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps and they may appear anywhere between 6 hours to 6 days after the ingestion.

The symptoms should be gone within 4-7 days. The immunocompromised may experience the worst symptoms that could even lead to a life-threatening situation.

How to cook tortillas?

In a pan

Heat the pan and splash some water over it. For pan-heating tortillas, butter or oil is not needed. Then heat the tortillas for 40-45 seconds on each side. Beware of overheating the tortillas as it can ruin their texture.

Using the gas Bruner

Heating the tortillas in the gas burner is rather quick. The flame should be turned on to a medium or medium-high flame. Then hold the tortillas over the flame and heat on both sides until just ready.

In the oven

This is a good method for heating a large number of tortillas at once. Pile up 5-6 tortillas. Make one or more piles as per need. Wrap each pile of the tortillas with a large piece of aluminum foil. Then bake in the oven at 177 °C (350 °F), for 8-10 minutes.

Microwaving is not recommended but it is a quick method to heat your tortillas. You should be fine as long as you know how to avoid uneven heating in the microwave. You can look up tutorials on the internet to perfectly microwave tortillas.

This method is rather unconventional but not impractical. All you need to do is hold your tortillas over steam until they are nice and warm. The steam could be produced using different methods.

Do tortillas go bad?

Yes, like any other food commodity, tortillas will eventually go bad and quicker if stored incorrectly. Moisture and heat exposure is the enemy of the quality of tortillas. It is best to keep the tortillas within the manufacturer’s seal as long as possible.

Once the original packaging is torn apart, the spoilage process will accelerate. Opened packages of tortillas should be protected against humidity and temperature fluctuations by placing storing the tortillas in air-tight containers.

Can you eat expired tortillas?

You can safely eat expired tortillas unless they are moldy. Expiry is not an indicator of spoilage. It, rather, tells you how long the tortillas will maintain their peak quality.

Therefore, expired tortillas do not taste as good as fresh ones. Always inspect the expired tortillas for spoilage before consuming them.

How to tell if the tortillas are bad?

Bad odor is the telltale of spoilage and is hard to ignore. So, if the tortillas give off a musty or tangy smell, they are done for.

If everything is good about the appearance of the tortillas, taste some tortillas just to be sure. Taste-testing a small number of tortillas won’t harm you and will confirm whether the tortillas are bad or not.
