Can you eat chalk for heartburn?

Yes, you can eat chalk for heartburn, but it is not highly recommended. Chalk contains calcium carbonate which is an alkali and it can help in neutralizing acid which is produced during heartburn. This acid is produced by the stomach and there is no proper digestion which makes a person suffer from heartburn.

Chalk is considered a good antacid for heartburn because of its chemical nature but it should be taken only in cases when there is no other treatment available. The reason for this is that chalk can contain several other chemicals in addition to calcium carbonate and they can be harmful to the person who consumes it.

If there is no other option available, then chalk can be taken but you should first break it into pieces then dissolve it in water. After dissolving into water, you can take chalk to treat your heartburn.

What is heartburn?

Heartburn is a condition in which there is a burning pain in the chest of the person. This pain occurs in the area which is behind the breast bone. It can also be a symptom of pregnancy or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The pain occurs mostly after the person has eaten some food. It also occurs when a person lies down, right after eating a meal or is in the bending position or in the evening time.

If the heartburn is occurring occasionally, then there is no need to worry and it is not an alarming situation but if it occurs more often, then it should be treated with proper medication. Heartburn which occurs regularly and is severe is an indicator of GERD.

There is no exact time frame for heartburn and it can last from a few minutes to a few hours. People who suffer from occasional heartburn can treat their medical condition by just changing their lifestyle, or by using over the counter medicines.

Symptoms of heartburn:

During heartburn, there is a pain in the centre of the chest along with that there are also some other symptoms that may be experienced by the person suffering from heartburn that is as follows:

Causes of heartburn:

Heartburn may occur when the valve between the oesophagus, which is a food pipe, and the stomach does not close properly. This problem in the closing of the valve leads to reflux where acid from the stomach moves back to the mouth, which causes a burning sensation.

Treatment of heartburn:

In most cases, heartburn is treated by using over the counter medications. These over the counter medications include antacids or acid blockers. These medications will help in neutralizing the effect of acid being produced in heartburn.

While in cases of severe heartburn there are proper medications and various other steps which need to be fulfilled.

Chalk for heartburn:

Chalk is considered to be a good antacid for heartburn. An antacid is a medication that is given to neutralize the effects of heartburn which is caused by the backflow acid from the stomach back to the oesophagus.

Antacids are medications that have long been used to treat heartburn. Chalk has calcium carbonate in it which is considered to be the most potent antacid in treating heartburn.

But this calcium carbonate is not a highly preferable antacid because of some of the side effects. When a person intakes calcium, then some other chemicals present in the chalk are also ingested by the body which can be poisonous. While in other cases, there is the absorption of calcium in the body which is also a risk for kidney stones.
