Yes, you can cook cabbage in a crockpot. It is very easy to prepare crockpot cabbage that mixes crispy bacon, soft cabbage, onion, garlic, with broth which cooks it to perfection inside the crockpot or slow cooker.  

This is a very simple dish to prepare. We recommend using a 6 quart crock pot for cooking a whole head of cabbage in the crockpot.

The smaller the pot, the slower it will cook. Reduce the recipe by half, including the cooking hours, if you’re using a smaller crockpot.

How to cook cabbage in a crockpot?

If your crockpot has the capacity, throw in an entire head of cabbage in it. Otherwise, make the full recipe with half a pound of cabbage instead.

Cabbage has to be cooked with several cups of stock to avoid it from overcooking and burning in your crockpot. While vegetarian broth is OK, We prefer using chicken broth or stock.

Keep a few slices of bacon on hand for garnishing the cabbage when presenting your dinner. 

The greater the quality of your bacon, the stronger the aroma of the cabbage will be. The suggestion is to fry your bacon before cooking it with the cabbage, although this isn’t necessary. In my perspective, it improves the flavour.

To save time and avoid sautéing onion, Simply use dried chopped onion instead. Your onion may certainly be cooked in the bacon oil once it has been browned. 

As an alternative, you can use just one medium-sized onion for the entire recipe. You may also use sautéed baby pearl onions, which are a lovely alternative.

Minced garlic – this flavour-enhancing ingredient should not be omitted. Garlic powder can be substituted for garlic if you do not have it on hand.  While cooking, taste it, if necessary, add a little more.

Salt and black pepper the crockpot cabbage to your liking once it’s cooked in the slow cooker. Although the broth or bacon already has a lot of salt, We still like to add a lot of finely ground pepper to my dishes.

Adding butter isn’t necessary, the cabbage will be cooked with a delicious buttery flavour on its own. A few tablespoon-sized pats of butter, on the other hand, are something I’ll occasionally add. For the buttered bacon-and-bacon cabbage, We add them first, then my seasonings.

Tip

Use veggie broth instead, eliminate the bacon, and leave off the butter. Even after it’s been cooked, the cabbage is still delicious.

Cooking the cabbage

  • Add the chopped cabbage to your crockpot after removing the core.
  • Add onion, garlic, bacon, plus broth or you can use stock in the cabbage and cook until the cabbage is tender. Mix thoroughly.
  • Put the crockpot on high and cover it. Cook the cabbage for 4 hours, or until it is soft .
  • When the cabbage is cooked, taste it and add salt and pepper if necessary. Serve immediately, and if wanted, garnish with more crispy bacon.
  • Cooked chicken, Cheese crusted chicken and pork chops, balsamic ham, and kielbasa can all be served on top of your cabbage.

How to store leftover cabbage?

Use an airtight container to store the rest of your cooked cabbage. Cabbage may be stored in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days before being used.

And if you want to reheat the cabbage, simply put it in the microwave. Once the cabbage has been microwaved or pan-fried over medium-high heat, you are ready to serve it. Cook your cabbage for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the thickness of your slaw, or until it is well warmed through.
