You can make cold brews in the fridge. It is up to you to choose to make cold brew either on the countertop or in the fridge. If you make cold brew in the fridge, it would take longer to prepare. At room temperature, it takes 12 hours to make a cold brew, hence, in the refrigerator, it would take 17 hours. You could choose to opt for either way to brew your cold coffee, depending on your circumstance.

If you cold brew coffee in the fridge, it lasts longer and retains its aroma for long periods. Similarly, cold brew coffee stays fresh for longer and tastes better than hot brews.

How to make cold brew coffee in the fridge?

Coffee is known and consumed for its stimulating properties and is a popular morning beverage.

To make cold brew in the fridge take medium roast coffee beans and grind them coarsely. To make cold brew, the grains should be the size you would use for the french press.

Add water to the coffee grounds and let it steep in the fridge for around 16 to 20 hours.

To serve, add 2 parts of filtered water and one part of the cold brew.

What is the ideal time to make cold brew in the fridge?

At room temperature, cold brew would take an average of 16 hours, with that in mind you could extrapolate the time to 20 hours for the refrigerated cold brew.

The exact time depends on your preference and the quantity of coffee that you brew. Most of the caffeine from coffee beans is extracted within 8 hours of steeping. Other compounds; flavonoids, chlorogenic acid, and quinic acid that contribute to the flavor of coffee take longer to steep out of coffee beans.

After about 18 hours, the coffee beans start to become over-extracted and cause a woody note. Hence, if you cold brew the coffee in the fridge, you do not want to exceed the time at 23 hours. Brewing any kind of coffee for more than 24 hours is not recommended and is useless in all aspects of taste and flavor.

What kind of roast should you use for cold brew?

To make a cold brew, it is recommended that you use dark roast. Medium roasts work better if you make a hot brew, while for cold brew, dark roasts work better.

Dark roast produces a cold brew that has flat, low notes while light roast makes cold brew insufficiently well-rounded.

Finally, the cold brew concentrate can be then made into a coffee drink such as iced coffee, iced cold brew latte, and even cold brew soda.

To make iced coffee, take the cold brew concentrate and add cold water and ice, for a latte add some milk to your liking. If you like to drink hot coffee, then add some hot water.

How to make the cold brew coffee taste good for long?

  • Keep your cold brew in the fridge to make it last for anywhere between 7 to 10 days.
  •  If you leave it at room temperature for more than five hours, you must throw it away. It would cause an off-taste and an unpleasant smell. Store your cold brew in an air-tight container to prevent air from reaching the brewed coffee.
  • Do not leave coffee exposed at room temperature for more than 30 minutes. As soon as the coffee beans are added to water, they release acids, aromatics, and acids and the oxidation process starts.
  • When you store coffee, make sure to use a glass container rather than plastic. Plastic is porous, which means that air can penetrate the flask and affect the quality of your cold brew.
  • When coffee spoils, the flavorful oils become oxidized into toxic compounds. Your coffee becomes rancid and hence inconsumable. Do not let coffee with milk sit around at room temperature because it will make it less flavorful and encourage the growth of bacteria and even molds.
  • Freezing the cold brew is also an option if you would like to stretch it for longer. However, freezing would slightly impact the flavor profile negatively.
