Can Trulicity be put back in the fridge? (3 Safety Tips)

In this brief guide, we will answer the question, can Trulicity be put back in the fridge? We will discuss how to handle and store Trulicity and some tips if you would like to travel while you are using it.

Can Trulicity be put back in the fridge?

Trulicity can be put back in the fridge, however, you can use it for 14 hours only. The 14-hour period can be broken into a single 14-hour exposure or can be left out of the fridge for a consecutive 14-hour period.

When you expose Trulicity to room temperature, it must not be used after the 14-hour or 336-hour mark has lapsed.

Trulicity must not be put in the freezer as it can make the medicine ineffective. Once it is exposed to a temperature lower than 2 celsius, you must throw it away.

After 14 hours Trulicity has significantly deteriorated in quality and will no longer be an efficient medicine, if safe. If the Trulicity has been left out for 14 hours, you must throw it away as the medicine is now useless.

What is Trulicity?

Trulicity is a single-use disposable, prefilled injection. Trulicity comes in 0.75 mg, 1.5 mg, 3.0 mg and 4.5 mg. Trulicity provides 1.5 mg/0.5 ml which is injected weekly. The pen has a green injection button that automatically inserts the needle into the skin, releasing the medicine, and then retracts back.

Trulicity is also known as dulaglutide. Dulaglutide is an active ingredient and is made from a live organism.

Trulicity is prescribed to people who are 18 years and older and have type 2 diabetes. Trulicity helps to manage blood sugar in such people alongside diet and exercise.

Trulicity also helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular, heart attack, and strokes.

The injection is administered in the thigh, upper arms, or stomach. Trulicity is supposed to be taken every week; on the same day and the time of the week.

How to care for Trulicity?

Trulicity can be put in the fridge or stored at room temperature for up to 14 days. Room temperature implies that the temperature must stay under 86 Fahrenheit or 30 degrees Celsius. Keep Trulicity in its original packaging and away from direct sunlight.

After you take Trulicity out of the fridge, let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes before injecting. Do not use the stove, microwave, or boiling water to warm up the injection.

Trulicity should be kept away from children and pets and must be disposed of properly. Use a sharps container or a puncture-resistant container to store the Trulicity pen before disposal.

The container should have a tight lid and must be large enough to hold the pen. A good example is a laundry detergent bottle or a coffee can.

Can you travel with Trulicity?

You can travel with Trulicity. Trulicity can be put in carry-on baggage for up to 14 days. The company does not recommend storing Trulicity in coolers to keep them cold. However, if you store Trulicity in coolers, they must not come in contact with ice or frozen gel packs.

It is not recommended to store Trulicity in checked luggage where the temperature could exceed the suggested benchmark.

When you are traveling, you can carry a portable medical-grade travel cooler. The coolers have been designed for temperature-sensitive medicines such as Trulicity. The device will keep your medicine safe for up to 72 hours without the need for electricity or ice.

The device works through a USB-power source which includes a power bank, a cigarette lighter, or a portable solar panel. If the medicine cooler is TSA-approved, you do not need to worry about the security letting you through.

How does Trulicity work?

Trulicity is a dulaglutide, it mimics the action of GLP-1 which is responsible for enabling the body to produce insulin. Trulicity is not insulin. It is used in people with type 2 diabetes.

People with type 2 diabetes have a working pancreas that is capable of releasing insulin. The injection stimulates the production of insulin in a person, consequently controlling blood sugar by inhibiting the release of glucagon and slowing down the digestive system.

As Trulicity slows down the time it takes for food to move through the stomach, it prevents a sudden spike in blood sugar levels.

In type 1 diabetes, on the other hand, the body is not capable of producing insulin, hence the injection is useless.
