Side effects like damage to kidneys, reproductive system, and cardiovascular system have been ascribed to using raw stevia herb.

Stevia containing dextrose or maltodextrin should be avoided If you have diabetes. Use of such stevia will also add to your carb intake of the day since dextrose is pure glucose while maltodextrin is starch. 

A 2019 study showed that non-nutritive sweeteners including stevia might be disrupting the intestinal flora and/or trigger glucose intolerance and metabolic disorders. Other than that, the mild bitter or licorice-like taste of stevia might not fascinate some people. 

Stevia products containing sugar alcohols can lead to digestive problems reflected in bloating and diarrhea in some people.

Are there any benefits to using stevia?

Stevia is a zero-calorie non-nutritive sweetener. This attribute is highly important If you have a weight loss goal or diabetes. According to a study, stevia can effectively reduce the levels of glucose and insulin in the blood. 

It also helps regulate cholesterol by reducing the levels of bad cholesterol or LDL in the blood whilst increasing the levels of good cholesterol or HDL.

How long does stevia last?

Stevia in The Raw and Truvia last about 3 years. You can make the stevia lat beyond this time through good storage practices. If the stevia has been stored for way too long, check for signs of spoilage before using it.

Stevia safety and dosing

Stevia safety in certain populations 

Diabetes 

A stevia is an acceptable tool for controlling type 2 diabetes. However, you need to be specific about the type of stevia. 

Some blends of stevia have added sweeteners like dextrose and maltodextrin which can do the opposite of what you want to a diabetic patient. Therefore, moderation is the key. Alternatively, use pure stevia extract to be sure.

Pregnancy 

A moderate intake of steviol glycosides like Reb has been rendered safe to use during pregnancy and has not been found to negatively affect fertility. 

However, the same cannot be said for the whole-leaf stevia and raw extracts due to a lack of safety information. To be on the safe side, always use FDA-approved products composed of steviol glycosides.

Children 

Using stevia as a sweetener is a great way to make children avoid sugar. Sugars lead to weight gain and also increase the risk of heart diseases in children. 

Stevia is a good substitute for sugar in this regard. The permissible daily intake for stevia is 1.8 mg per pound of body weight (4 mg per kg) for both adults and children.
