  • Green potato skins and eyes contain a toxic compound called solanine which can be poisonous for rats. 
  • Raw onions lead to stomach issues in rats. They may also trigger anemia. Raw sweet potato results in the formation of cyanide in a rat’s stomach. 

Dangerous Fruits for rats 

Apple flesh is good for rats but apple seeds have cyanide in minute quantities. It can be poisonous If a large number of seeds are ingested. 

The peel or rind of avocado is toxic for rats. But the avocado flesh can be fed to rats in limited amounts. 

Green bananas inhibit the functioning of enzymes responsible for scratch digestion in rats. The d-limonene present in mango is responsible for causing kidney cancer in male rats. 

The white pith and the orange peel of oranges are toxic for rats. It is best to avoid this fruit altogether just to be on the safe side. Besides, orange juice has the same toxic compound as mango i.e d-limonene.

What type of seed and grain and grain products can rats safely consume?

Dry cereal like cheerios is great for rats. Avoid feeding any cereal like Rice Krispies to your rat because they have high sugar content.

Milk chocolate that has a high sugar and fat content is injurious to rat’s health. The fungal contaminants in dried corn can cause liver cancer in rats. Hamster food has a significantly high-fat content. This renders it unsuitable for rats. 

Licorice has been linked to causing neurological poisoning in rats. Just like humans, rats can become ill by consuming moldy food. 

Poppy seeds can make your rat ill. The illness can even be fatal. Sweet feed (used to feed horses) has high levels of corn and molasses which is unhealthy for rats.

The bacteria present in bulk tofu is dangerous for rats. Cooked insects are good for rats but wild insects are a big no as they can transfer diseases and parasites. 

Thick and sticky foods like peanut butter and jelly are choking hazards for rats. They should be fed in small amounts and that too after diluting them with some water.
